PHPI’s Project North Star advocated for fighting the human rights abuses of the North Korean regime. Their efforts focused on two bills: The North Korean Human Rights Reauthorization Act and House Resolution 620: A resolution seeking justice for the Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
The North Korean Human Rights Reauthorization Act renews a US program that equips nonprofit organizations that effectively fight human rights abuses by the North Korean government. This bill also increases the broadcasting of US news sources inside North Korea, helping to fight the repressive propaganda that is pushed by the state. This program also strives to improve family reunification and refugee protection for North Koreans in the surrounding nations.
House Resolution 620 takes a strong stance against North Korea’s abduction of foreign citizens. This resolution urges the state to release any abducted foreign nationals, provide information about deceased prisoners, make appropriate restitution regarding abductees, and permanently cease such activities.
Project North Star communicated with 72 legislators to advocate for the North Korean Human Rights Reauthorization Act House Resolution 620, including a notable and successful meeting with Rep. Ted Cruz’s office. By the end of the project, House Resolution 620 earned 7 additional cosponsors. If enacted soon, both of these bills will help to fight the abuses of the North Korean regime and support the victims of its brutality.
